Tanya: How I got involved with Spirit in Action

Last weekend, the Spirit in Action North American Board gathered for the first time since 2019. We've been meeting online for the past six years, and most of our current members had never met each other in person. Since we focus so much on building relationships, we figured it was time to get together in person to deepen our connection offline, to enhance our online interactions.

From Left to Right: Tanya Cothran, Danny Thomas, Kathleen King, Becky Sutherland, Amber Picou, and Tawanda Mutasah (We were missing Greg Coleman, Andrea Bianco, and our admin, Vera Martinoska)

On Friday evening, we each shared our stories of how we got involved with SIA. Each story wove elements of our desire to work for justice, someone inviting us to join the movement, and our readiness to learn more and share our talents. Later in the evening, we also talked about our spiritual paths and marvelled at the diversity of experiences and shared belief in something larger than ourselves.

I didn't realize Tawanda was filming me as I told my story of how I became involved in this work, and I'm happy to share this 2-minute glimpse of our evening together.

As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary (1996-2026!), I am so grateful for the many people who have been part of SIA over our history so far.

I was giving Tanya a ride from Tahoe JFO to Marsha and Dennis’ house and she asked if I’d consider joining the board of SIA. I agreed. Marsha was still the administrator. My first board meeting the board considered the question of whether to close down SIA as there was very little money left in the bank account. We decided to keep going until there wasn’t any money left, but started a more deliberate effort to generate funds. It worked and I’m glad SIA is still existing!
