Meet Elizabeth Karagata, a dedicated member of the Utumi Self-Help Group, who is transforming her family's future thanks to Rural Initiatives Development Programme (RIDEP) and Spirit in Action. With a grant from SIA in 2024, RIDEP has coordinated thirteen self-help groups, where farmers in their rural, central Kenyan community encourage one another and access safe savings and loans.

With a loan of 5,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $30) from her Self-Help Group, Elizabeth was able to start a life-changing project for her family. RIDEP aims to promote collaboration between spouses in business, and Elizabeth’s husband, eager to help, sent Kshs. 10,000 from Mombasa, where he works, to aid in the project.
With this support, Elizabeth launched a successful greengrocer and eatery, specializing in organic vegetables, tea, and mandazi (doughnuts). This initiative has not only empowered her economically but also created a positive ripple effect on her family's well-being.

The successful business has enabled Elizabeth to provide for her family in various ways. She used the profits to pay for her younger children's school fees, ensuring they could attend the full term. Elizabeth also bought a shirt for her husband, something she had never done before. Excited by the success, her husband has begun supporting the family more.
The story of Elizabeth Karagata is just one example of how projects from Spirit in Action’s Grant Partners are making a significant impact in communities. By providing financial support and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit, we are helping families come together for a brighter future.
