Ubuntu Community-Based Organization, one of SIA’s Grant Partners in Kenya, is training 60 young mothers from Githurai-45's informal settlements in hair, beauty, massage, caregiving, and entrepreneurship skills to achieve economic independence. Building on their success last year, Ubuntu is working toward national certification for their programs. They also started providing childcare support for students who bring their children to class, so that the students are able to fully concentrate on their studies.
One of Ubuntu’s students is Conjestina, a young mother of three who was married and later divorced at an early age. Despite the challenges she has faced, she joined the program with a strong determination to build a better future for herself and her children.
At the start of the training, during the first assessment, the Ubuntu team discovered that Conjestina could not read or write. She had been too embarrassed to share this earlier. Rather than allowing this to limit her, they adapted by conducting her assessments orally and offering additional support during training.
Conjestina quickly stood out for her resilience and attitude. Her joy and her contagious laughter brings energy and encouragement to the entire class. Throughout the course, she remained committed, practiced consistently, and showed great willingness to learn.

A powerful example of transformation
Over time, Conjestina’s natural talent, especially in hairdressing, became clear. She started with no prior skills, but now she is able to confidently serve clients and complete services within the appropriate time frame.
Her journey is a powerful example of transformation. With the right support and opportunity, Conjestina has moved from uncertainty to confidence, showing that challenges such as limited education do not define one’s potential. Her story continues to inspire others in the program to keep going and believe in what is possible.
Ubuntu remains dedicated to the goals of their training program and their focus is to deepen their impact, improve quality, and ensure sustainability of the program.
