A
sharing of SIA's activities, accomplishments and visions for the future.
1998 was a very full
year for Spirit In Action. We began with our first project, Healthy
Children Healthy Planet. During the year our outreach in the community
drew us to two more projects. One was the "Let's Keep 'Organic'"
Organic" campaign. This powerful campaign broke records by
inspiring hundreds of thousands of consumer letters to the USDA opposing
the proposed regulations for organic labeling.

Healthy
Children Healthy Planet Boulder, CO. Pilot School Project
The script for the
"Earth-Body Ecology" curriculum has been completed and approved.
Phase two of the program will call for the completion and publication
of this curriculum, Our goal is to reach thousands of children and their
families, sharing with them the journey food takes from the Earth through
their own bodies, and then empowering them to put their "Spirit
In Action" by offering them organic and natural foods in their
homes and schools.
Boulder Health
Symposium:
In
October 98. Odwalla, Inc. helped to sponsor the first Healthy Children
Healthy Planet Health Symposium in Boulder, CO. Parents, teachers and
students came to Boulder from Denver and Jefferson County to sample
fresh organic foods and snacks. Ten Olympic Athletes joined health practitioners
speaking to community members about the value in eating natural and
organic foods. Susan Campbell presented a media presentation for all
ages, showing the profound affect of industrial food production and
agriculture on our bodies and the environment. The symposium was a milestone
in achieving the welcome of HCHP from community members.
Atlanta Health
Symposium:
In collaboration with Donna Gates, a noted nutritionist and
doctor, Susan Campbell produced a community health symposium focused
on children and school food in Atlanta, GA. Educators, parents, and
students attended from all areas of the city, and Susan gave classroom
presentations at Paces Academy to the fiflh and sixth grade classes.
The symposium was a great success, with several schools taking steps
to add organic and plant-based foods to their menus.
Odwalla Becomes
Active Sponsor:
Odwalla, Inc. has adopted the Healthy Children Healthy Planet
project. Susan Campbell flew to Odwalla's corporate headquarters in
Half Moon Bay California to train marketing staff on how to give classroom
presentations. They have begun giving presentations all across the country.
Odwalla also published an educational brochure for Healthy Children
Healthy Planet that will be used in their educational outreach. Odwalla
is the first of many corporate relationships that are being pursued
for 99.
Natural Products
Trade Shows:
The Natural Products Expo's are excellent for the latest in
health education and policy reform for labeling, organic food, alternative
supplements and therapies. The Expos are where we acquire the education
and support we need from the industry members who are striving for Americans
to have a safe and sustainable food supply.
The
"Keep Organic Organic' Campaign.
In the spring of 98, SIA was asked to produce the launch of
the "Keep Organic Organic" Campaign which is being implemented
by Citizens for Health, in association with the Organic Trade Association
and Sustain. This campaign has emerged in response to the USDA's recently
proposed Organic Standards which, among other things, would permit irradiated
and genetically engineered foods to be labeled "organic."
The campaign's effort includes informing consumers through celebrity
and citizen PSA's (public service announcements), a national retailer
action day (Natural food store across the country, including the national
chains like Wild Oats, Alfalfas, and Patagonia), a web site, and materials
for consumer education and action.
With many schools
focusing on late Spring for SIA's key activities, this campaign came
at a perfect time. SIA's leadership role proved to be an excellent strategy
for building relationships with key environmental and trade organizations,
businesses, and individuals, and for demonstrating the timeliness of
SIA's work It has given us a tremendous boost to make connections for
our future work in schools. The integrity of organic foods is vital
to SIA's mission, and this issue has become the focus of the natural
foods industry and many other organizations and potential supporters.

Boulder
Y2K Community Preparedness
Y2K Community
Preparedness, Boulder, CO:
As the year 2000 approaches there is much concern about the
computer shutdown due to the double digit scenario. When SIA was approached
to sponsor the Boulder Country Y2K Community Preparedness (BY2K), we
gave it serious consideration and decided to move ahead in the summer
of 98. We understood the deeper meaning and wonderful opportunities
for community building and the implementation of natural system designs.
BY2K has attracted a breath of merging souls contributing to each other,
the Earth and our social systems in a way that many of us have been
longing and working for. Communities are coming together all over the
country to strategize how they might care for each other and learn to
live more simply. For the first time in our history people are paying
attention to how their world works. The BY2K group has made tremendous
strides in their organization and outreach thus far. One of the most
notable is the Preparedness Guide that was published by Utne Reader.
Y2K National
Conference, Boulder, CO:
The BY2K group partnered with the Cassandra Project in the
production of the "YEAR 2000 Public Awareness and Preparedness
Seminar' in August. The conference featured national experts from related
fields to provide a thorough understanding of the problem, potential
solutions for contingency planning, individual and neighborhood preparedness
and supporting philosophies to over 500 people. The conference was covered
by all local media as well as NBC's "Night Line" Local TV
Show
The Upside
of Y2K:
Another project for the Y2K work is a local community television
show for local and national reporting and preparedness. The first show
is scheduled to air in January 99.
