Spirit in Action has an ongoing, primary commitment to these Governing
Principles:
Children’s Health: Systemic Definition, Change & Re-Integration
Research and analysis of specific risk factors affecting children’s
health, 2) how these risk factors combine and synergistically contribute
to children’s disease, behavioral problems, and unhealthy lifestyles,
3) development of practical systemic solutions to counter/eliminate related
risk factors by providing positive health alternatives acceptable to children,
and 4) catalyzing change and reintegration of positive health alternatives
through public education and advocacy.
i Public Education
Development and dissemination of information and resources on children’s
health issues to grassroots, regional, and national audiences. The health
problems of children in disadvantaged/underserved communities is a particularly
important focus.
i Advocacy
An ongoing campaign for children’s health issues in all available
local, regional, national (and, beginning in 2005, global) media.
i Ecology
A deep belief in the importance of being a trustee of the Earth and
maintaining/enhancing the balance and vitality of its natural synergistic
processes. In terms of children’s health, this specifically means
“Body Ecology”: an interdisciplinary approach to nutrition
education that links diet, Earth’s ecosystems, and the body’s
inner ecology with specific environmental and cultural factors. The
purpose of Body Ecology is to instill specific practices and reinforce
behaviors that maintain/ enhance the body’s natural health, balance
and vitality while reducing/eliminating known risk factors.
i Best Practices
SIA’s organizational processes reflect professional “best
practice” standards endorsed by the National Council for Non-Profit
Organizations and the National Center for Non-Profit Boards.
